A blog dedicated to the dolphins in Florida, both wild and captive. I also blog at ExploreFloridaWaters.com, but I just need a extra little space all to itself to share about my number one favorite Florida water inhabitant, the dolphins and other cetaceans
Dolphin Behaviors ~ Floating at Water's Surface
Sometimes, wild dolphins will float at the water's surface, often with their back and part of the dorsal fin above the surface.
This behavior is called "logging," because the dolphin looks something like a floating log.
Logging may have several purposes. Sometimes, it is observed during social interactions, but very likely, this serves as a way of rest or sleeping. Other ways that dolphins may rest/sleep include swimming around slowly or even laying on the bottom for short amounts of time.
