A blog dedicated to the dolphins in Florida, both wild and captive. I also blog at ExploreFloridaWaters.com, but I just need a extra little space all to itself to share about my number one favorite Florida water inhabitant, the dolphins and other cetaceans
Dolphin Behaviors ~ Breaching, Jumping, or Leaping
Breaching, jumping and leaping are probably the most exciting dolphin behaviors to observe. Bottlenose Dolphins display a wide variety of jumps and breaches.
There are many reasons why dolphins jump out of the water. Some believe that, by jumping above the water's surface, dolphins may be able to look for diving seabirds, indicating where fish are located.
Many times, Bottlenose Dolphins leap and jump when playing, hunting, fighting, socializing, or mating.
Sometimes, if a dolphin is swimming at very fast speeds, when it comes to the surface for air, instead of surfacing regularly, it will come completely out of the water in a long, shallow leap.
Sometimes, dolphins will breach repeatedly in an attempt to knock parasites and/or remora fish off of their skin.
Bottlenose Dolphins can leap up to sixteen feet above the water, but most jumps are between three and seven feet high.
