There's many ways to see this painting...
Moonlight shines down on a dolphin swimming through the open sea.
Or maybe, an intercoastal dolphin drifts by the docks lining the shoreline of a quiet bay, suddenly passing under an unusually bright fish-attracting light mounted just above the water's surface. He glances upwards, surprised by the sudden change from dark to bright.
